Running head: Psychodynamic therapy Name: Course: Tutor: Institution: Date: Introduction This study was first introduced in the year 1874 by a German scientist referred to as Ernest Wilhelm von Brucke through the principle of thermodynamics, in his study in a lecture publication on physiology, he asserted that living things are energy systems that are governed by the principle of energy thermodynamics. This is a type of psychology that deals with the uncovering of the clients psychological content in relation to the alleviation of the psychological tension in the clients life or mind. According to the psychological doctors, psychodynamic therapy is thus a type of depth psychology that that is brief and less in its intensity compared to psychoanalysis. When it comes to its operational approaches, the psychodynamic therapy works on the basis of interpersonal relationship in the therapist and customer association compared to other forms of psycho therapy. In addition to that, psych dynamic therapy is more eclectic than other forms of psychological therapy. This kind of psychodynamic therapy applies operational techniques from various sources and therefore does not rely on a single system of counseling intervention. According to previous studies, the system has been used in nearly all aspects of therapy like the group psychotherapy, family psychotherapy and even individual psychotherapy. Psychodynamic psychotherapy has the following characteristics; first it emphasizes on the centrality of the intrapsychic and conflicts that are unconscious in relation to the human development. The psychodynamic therapy also shows the defenses as the developments in the internal psychic structure that is after avoiding the consequences of conflict that may not be welcoming in any situation. The therapy also carries an assumption that the psychopathology develops from childhood life (Sundberg & Norman, 2001). There are several forms of approach in the counseling field; there is the use of the spoken conversation, there is the use of artwork, the use of narrative in story and music and the use of drama. For the case of Stephen, the counselor would prefer to use a conversational art which would engage both the parties and in this case there is the counselor or the therapist and the client who is Stephen. This method of therapeutic approach will aid in the response of variety of specific and non specific information from him. Basically in counseling, it is a matter of interchanging information between the two parties. Also, the counselor can too apply the psychoanalytic approach referred to as psychotherapy which would encourage Stephen to directly verbally talk out his thoughts which would include free association. From this, the therapist would be able to formulate the nature of Stephens’s problems of the unconscious conflicts. Through the psychodynamic depth psychology, the counselor’s major focus on Stephen will be to finds out contents that bare unconscious in Stephen who in this case is the client with the intention of reducing the tension in Stephen. In relation to an approach given to Stephens’s case, the counselor would apply the cognitive behavioral approach which will generally be used by the counselor to identify maladaptative cognition, beliefs of the client, appraisal and reactions that aim at the influence of the destructive negative emotions that are problematic and dysfunctional behaviors in the client. In this case, the counselor would therefore with his human development context regarding the spiritual life he has decided to take up. This will help him emphasize on the meaning of life as a member of that particular family and the role played by a Christian in leadership and the love for others. The counselor would also urge Stephen to make up his life towards the positive growth as a Christian rather than pathology which will make him maximize his potential capacity. As a Christian, Stephen should be encouraged to create and repair the spoiled relationship between him and the other family members especially the parents (Fadul, J., Canlas, R., 2009), Cognitive behavior theory in most of the occasion’s attempts to bring out the through explanation the relationship between any subjective experiences in life of a client that may include cognition and affect and the overt behavior which is either disordered or ordered. According to skintnner, (1972), the theory believes that old traditional behavior theory will either deny the existence of the cognition or has no capability of holding the within the human context of life. These misconceptions may be due to the confusions between the principles that govern the application of these behavioral principles (Zettle & Heyes, 1982). Cognition plays a very important role in counseling, first it is seen to be influential in the in determining the nature of the development of the cognitive behavioral psychotherapy, Ellis and Harper, (1977), therefore assert that in accordance to the amount of history offered in relation to cognitive therapy, social learning was ideally seen to offer a comprehensive revolutionary human change processes. The observational learning in this context thus aids in the understanding of the deficiencies. As a theoretical patent, it is seen to be the most effective form of human learning in psychotherapy. According to Bandura, (1977), observational learning would be the best application I counseling due to its effectiveness as the learner seems to get more in learning, the client is able to integrate mores kills as observed and will tae less time in the getting o the required concept from the study of the implementation of psychotherapy. From this both of them and in this case is the counselor and Stephen who is the client will be able to understand the basis or the foundation of what brought about all these hell. With a clear historical timeline understanding of the baseline information, it will then guide them in the establishment of the best approach in the talks to clear up the mess that has affected the client psychologically. Bearing in mind that Stephens’s case is a contingency reinforcement attitude, the counselor should understand the occasion in which the response occurred, and how the responses were themselves and the consequences of the reinforcement of Stephens’s departure from the house and pressure from the parents on him to marry. From the understanding of the foundation of everything, the counselor would then give a social study approach that would enable to understand basically what he is facing and the possible technicalities that would help him out of the mess. Social approach will help the counselor to air out what it means to establish a good rapport with the entire community in particular his parents. In addition to this, the counselor would encourage Stephen to live on one side of life that would influence his positive life and growth as a Christian for living on both sides would not make the comity really trust his personality. If the client who in this case is Stephen would agree to live on one side of life, this would greatly help him grow spiritually and therefore all the other characters portrayed in his life would simply be swept away by the supernatural nature of spirituality basing on his faith and actions. Leaning on the Christian perspective of life will too help him root ot the nature of drinking in his life and even extra marital sexual behavior that Stephen has adapted in his lifestyle. Using the observation theory approach, the counselor an find a video clip to show Stephen and would pick on a case study of a client who might have had the same challenge in life and show him exactly how he came out of it. This is going to be offered only after the psychosocial study (Boscon & Pusch, 1973). Also in regard to observational approach, the counselor can provide Stephen with the spiritual messages tat would actually build up his faith in God bearing in mind the biblical scripture that says faith cometh by the hearing and the hearing of the word of God. Once this sinks at the back of his mind, the spiritual life will then be built basing on the knowledge to the word of God in his life.
