Circumstances Where Bad Governance Is Caused By Liberal Democratic Regime by State Date Circumstances Where Bad Governance Is Caused By Liberal Democratic Regime Introduction Have you imagined living in country with no democracy? The effects of lack of democracy are obvious to many as the result is always dictatorship. Democracy allows individuals to choose the leaders they want by casting votes in a free and fair process that is not subject to intimidation. Therefore, democracy is a leadership system associated with a majority rule. A liberal democracy can be defined as a form of democracy where there is real democracy and a competitive political process. There are different kinds of democracy used worldwide and an example is the liberal democracy. Despite the fact that democracy should protect the citizens’ rights, liberal democracy may not be conducive to the provision of a good government in a country when not accurately implemented. This paper aptly examines the circumstances to which the existence of liberal democratic regime in a country not be conducive to the provision of good government in a country. Body Delays in the administration of justice may lead to liberal democratic regime to be not conducive to the provision of a good government in a country as it may fail to protect the human rights of citizens living in a country. When a liberal democratic government fails to protect and increase civil liberties against the encroachment of forces within a society, it automatically fails in providing good governance to citizens living within the country. A liberal democratic regime should protect the rights of the people by ensuring that their rights and interest are protected and that the administration of justice system is fast and fair to citizens who find themselves engaged in the process. A failed liberal democratic regime in a country can be witnessed by excessive adjournments of cases due to corruption and poor legal structure formulated by the government of a country. The existence of liberal democratic regime may lead to bad governance as it gives citizens a right to voluntary voting. This implies that citizens are not subject to forced voting but a legal obligation. Good governance is promoted when all citizens exercise their democratic rights at voting. The majority always gets their way and they elect leaders of their choice. When only a section of the citizen turn up to cast their votes, democracy fails as only a few group of individuals make major decisions on the governance of a country. Compulsory voting makes the electorate body responsible for the type of leaders thy elect and in most cases concentrates with the choices of the majority of the citizens. A liberal democratic regime may cause harm to a country because in cases of voluntary voting, the citizens may let the chance of having a good a leader pass them as legible voters may decline to vote or vote for other contestants who are not legible for good governance from other parties(Deutsch & Soffer, 1987, 94). Citizen initiated referenda in a liberal democratic regime may also lead to flaws in the governance of a country. The public’s opinion might always not be right and citizen initiated referenda performed to allow the public to select leaders and laws they deem are productive and policies they feel are good may result to bad governance in the country. The process of Citizen initiated Referenda is time consuming as it passes through several stages. Moreover, good policies and policies may be thwarted by the citizens because the result favors the majority rule. Despite, the fact that the liberal democratic regime promotes liberty and democracy, it may also result to bad government and dictatorship because the electorate may not be fair in the process of electing leaders and choosing policies as they may base their votes according to various discriminative factors like ethnicity and tribalism of the leaders they elect in office. An example is that numerous countries always cast their votes according to tribal alliances rather than ideologies and in the process; they elect bad leaders over good leaders (Pollitt & Bouckaert, 2011, 315). Liberal democratic regime promotes bad governance in country because of the opinionated views of their members; this is because most members practicing liberalism do not have respect to the basic human and sacred life. Their comments have negative impacts on the public and may lead to breakout of conflicts. An example is that a politician in the liberal democratic regime may promote bad governance by not promoting basic human rights of citizens in a country and fueling conflicts by the utterances made regarding various issues in the society. Their policies do not protect the environment as they are profit oriented and ignores their vast responsibility to the citizens and to the country (Deutsch & Soffer, 1987, 94). There are individuals who acquire property out of fraudulent deeds. A liberal democratic regime might be biased as it supports rights to private property which were acquired by bad terms. An example is that an individual can acquire a property illegally and change the papers to his or her name. The government will support the rights of the fraudster because of the legal documents possessed. Conversely, the entitled owner of the property will be defenseless and in the process loose valuable assets due to bad governance promoted by the liberal democratic regime. Liberal democratic regime also promotes bad governance as it allows state and territorial government to compulsory acquire property not entitled to them without compensating the real owner. The legal owner will have been discriminated because he will not have been compensated or awarded fair trials in trying to regain his asset. Moreover, in a liberal regime, bad governance is promoted because the state and federal government are allowed by the constitution to pass and implement policies which are destructive to property and beneficial to the processes of the government. Bad governance is also promoted by a liberal democratic regime because of its ideologies concerning parliamentary terms and recall voting. The system allows for bad governance of a country by encouraging election of incompetent or corrupt governments. They believe that elections are conducted in favor of a sitting government and in most third world developing countries; it is characterized by intimidation and corruption to turn the result to their favor as they have in possession government resources. The system also encourages numerous democratic options available to the citizens and this leads to bad governance in a country as the citizens in most cases have a feeling that they have other options of leaders or constitution they want to govern them. An example is that a country may cast votes to change the policies in a constitution and recall for dissolution of the sitting government and elect leaders of their choice. A liberal regime promotes bad governance to country by encouraging legislative sunset clauses. Legislative clauses are always in terms of taxes, regulations and agencies. Bad governance is promoted in the clause because the sitting government and leaders do not adhere to the said policies. The clauses are used as inertia to prevent various bodies from uncovering various activities and spending of the government. This takes away the element of responsibility from the government as the investigative agencies and international bodies are limited in accessing information. The process involved is long and tedious as there are programs and channels to be followed to access vital information pertaining to the government, therefore, their activities are concealed to the public and international attention. Bad sunset clauses promotes bad governance as by virtue of the law some are not easily changed as they cease to make sense since they are long term laws (Pollitt & Bouckaert, 2011, 314). Bad governance resulting from a liberal democratic regime may result to reduced government intervention. Refusing to intervene in free market may cause harm to various parties involved in a market scenario. Fraudulent marketers and manufactures may flood the markets by fake and unhealthy goods which pose risk to the citizens of the country and the economy of the nation. An example is that in free markets, the economy of country might be destroyed as the locale manufactures will loose their markets to international companies and individuals who comes up with various strategies of maximizing their profits and developing their country. When the economy of a country crushes because of the existence of free markets, the sitting government takes the blame because it is their duty to guarantee the rights of their citizens first before allowing for other ventures which are less profitable (Noble, Osheim & Strauss, 2008, 707). Bad governance may also be promoted by a liberal democratic regime by privatization of policies in a country. Privatization of policies does not empower the consumer choice of citizens and this is destructive as to the governance of the country as the government will have failed to protect the interest of the citizens. The main purpose of privatization is to improve the economic condition of country. However, some leaders in a liberal democratic regime may use it as opportunity of making profits for themselves. This violates the government responsibility towards the citizens as it fails to protect their rights and economy. An example is that when a government decides to shift the control of a state corporation into the hands of an individual or foreign multinationals, it indirectly shift the economic control of a country into the hands of individuals who have the power to make changes for their profitability rather than for the development of country(Zuzowski, 1998, 48). A liberal democratic regime may encourage bad governance in country by its taxation process. This may occur when the government favors a few groups of individuals or companies. An example is that there are governments of particular countries that encourage few corporations to work with limited regulations of unfair taxation. All corporations working in a country should be equal and same taxation policies should be applied towards them to avoid complaints from other corporations providing goods and services in the country. This will promote a fair system of revenue collection and unfair competition of corporations (Abbott, 2003, 120). Bad governance is promoted by liberal democratic regimes in countries where democracy is not taken seriously. Freedom of individuals is associated to liberalism where individuals are allowed to make their own choices and decisions. However, liberalism is meaningless in a country with fake democracies. This is because individuals will not be allowed the freedom to make choices according to their own intuitions (Plattner, 2008, 55). Real democracies are what have encouraged individual and party liberties across countries in the world. An example is that in a country that does not practice real democracy; an individual may not be allowed the freedom to liberty as the government will interfere with the ideologies or liberties of the said party. Liberal regimes prides themselves of successful democracies, countries with failed democracies are characterized by single party system and the multiparty systems are not given a chance to participate in the elections by the government (Noble, Osheim & Strauss, 2008, 707). A liberal democratic regime promotes bad leadership in anticommunist countries as class of the citizens will have a feeling that they are being oppressed by the seating government. The government being for people and of the people will ignore the complaints of the complaining class since the few individuals with property or assets are also protected by the constitution. Conclusion In conclusion, liberal democracies are applauded for various positive measures in the society. However, a liberal democratic regime promotes bad governance in various cases as they may be cause for delays in the justices system. Since individuals in democratic countries have a right to free , fast and fair trials, delays in the justice is an example of bad governance. Voluntary voting is not healthy for countries practicing democracy since leaders elected may not be totally approved by all the electorates as most of the electorate will have failed to participate in the election system. Citizens initiated referenda promotes bad governance in a country as it cost the government to re-run elections and there is also abuse of money by politicians who strive to make the polls turn to their favor. A liberal democratic regime also fails to protect the rights of it citizens in regards to property ownership. This is because it allows for various branches like the state agencies to confiscate private property and also protect individuals who have obtained their wealth from fraudulent activities. Therefore, a good liberal government should promote freedom, respect minorities, ensure equality and encourage fraternity of citizens in a country. Bibliography Abbott, L. F. (2003).
