The Song ‘Not Afraid’ By Eminem Introduction In this literary analysis essay, I will analyze the song ‘Not Afraid’ by Eminem. The song is track #12 on the album Recovery. The song was written by Samuel, Mathew/Mathers, Marshall/Evans, Jordan/ Resto, Louis/Burnett. I will analyze this song in terms of both musical and cultural aspects. I will investigate and uncover the commonalities in the two versions of the song and narrow down to the topic of culture and music. Moreover, I will examine the physical environment and whatever it signifies. Further, I will label the cultural environment and what is depicted and collapse my examination to taking action. With this in mind, I, therefore, analyze the song in the subsequent subheadings below. Commonalities In both versions, the song details how Eminem is ready and never afraid of quitting the Illuminati he had engaged in due to the need for peace, riches, and fame. Further, the two versions talk about how Eminem wants to stop the drug and be a good father. The songs detail how far Eminem had to go to get to where he is currently. He came from a bad background as he struggled while embarrassed. He had none a part from one friend that he thought he was helpless. The songs themes remain unchanged in both the two versions. In fact, the lyrics themselves remain. The melody and the instrumental are still common and one in both versions. Further, the cultural and physical environment from the two versions is also similar and remains unchanged. Another common feature of the versions is the tone the singer uses. The tone of the song has remained unchanged, and this makes the listeners follow and make the inference from the original version. In addition, the two version have been separated in terms both choruses and verses and thus making it a commonality. Such a commonality help the listeners make meanings of the song and even be sufficiently entertained. The song beginning and endings are also similar and therefore one can easily make out the two versions without any difficulty. Physical environment The song depicts Eminem poor background marred with earlier struggling. Eminem thought he had no one to help him but had a gift of rapping. Eminem grew up, and his life became worse forcing him to get involve in dirty acts. Therefore, through this harsh physical environment, the Illuminati saw him, and he had no option but to join them. Eminem details in the song how he gave his life unto the Illuminati for peace, money, success and fame. Then, he thought it was the right thing to do. He regrets in the song not to have given his life to God. God could have helped him better and would go to hell upon his death. Therefore, his realization of such physical environment was too late but he writes the song to tell people how he was never afraid to quit. In addition, the song depicts the physical environment where Eminem got himself into drugs. He says how he overcame the drugs. Further, he talks about how he wants to become a good father and, therefore, says that we must assist him out of the situation. When he says that, ‘guess I had to go to that place to get to this place. In my view, he meant he had to join Illuminati to become rich and famous. Cultural environment Eminem’s ‘Not Afraid’ depicts a cultural environment full of Illuminati and drug addiction. He says how he is ready to get out the evil Illuminati and drug addiction to becoming a better father. He regrets how he could get rid of the evil money by going to God and being a religious Christian. He sees the difficulty in enjoying the evil money as he feels the money is evil and hence cannot give him peace. Therefore, we learn that he is to trash the harsh cultural environment that is full chains and hence no peace. Eminem depicts a culture where people should come together and oppose the drugs and Illuminati. He laments that even those who are still engaged in such acts should come and join hands with him and not to walk alone. There song’s cultural environment, therefore, signifies the need to break away from the chains of drug addiction and Illuminati and walk a better and harmonious life. Eminem has the best experience, and he decided to speak it out to help others who might be tempted to join such bondages. He creates a culture of non-fear as he stresses on his brevity and courage to quit the earlier evil dealings. Therefore, the songs is teaching the listens of the cultural actions that one might find himself in unknowingly or willingly but it is until one realizes and decide to take a stand when he can move out and break away from such disastrous activities. Taking Action The song is significance in that it talks about what it takes to take action. Eminem is never afraid of facing the reality of life. Despite his bad past where the mother was prosecuted and wife cheating on him, he sees the light of the tunnel. He says that he is ready to quit the drugs and become a good father, and he has nothing to fear. In addition, he is ready to abandon the Illuminati engagement and become a good person who can live in peace and harmony. Therefore, the song is significance to the listeners who are motivated to take actions once they have made the decisions. Eminem made the decision to relinquish the evil acts from the Illuminati and drug addiction. He vowed to change no matter what it takes. Therefore, from his bad experience he swears that he is ready to take the stand and never to go back. He is ready to walk through the storm and hence calls for everyone to hold his hand. He cannot continue living in that kind of life and has to break from that bondage. Conclusion The song,’ Not Afraid’ by Eminem is an inspirational song and emotionally provokes the listeners. The song details how Eminem had to accept evil acts to rich to where he was. He is depicted in the song as aversive and ready to pull out no matter what it takes. He vowed to overcome the storm regardless of whether conditions just to regain his identity and become a free individual once again and a good father. Therefore, we are urged by the song to appreciate the significance taking a stand amidst storms and opposition till we accomplish our goals. The song is educative and tells how we must rationally think and strategize how we can achieve whatever one has vowed to do. The song tells us that I whatever we do there are a number of the obstacles but it when one is brave and courageous we can surpass and overcome the conditions. He has sworn to break out of the cage and to trash the demolish acts by holding his ground. Therefore, those who want to put back their lives together must learn to hold their grounds and face the demons. Therefore, Eminem put it clear that he is never afraid of being a better person both for his fans and daughters. He is ready to help people of the situations by standing up to drugs and alcohol.
