Self-Analysis Leadership Project Self-Analysis Leadership Project EDUC 500 is a that has provided me with major insights that will help me with my academic work as well as give me practical knowledge in different areas such as leadership style, personal style inventory, transactional communications, communicating effectively, understanding values and emotional elements. Emotional (EQ at a glance) Emotional intelligence was measured by taking the “EQ at a glance assessment”. Possession of emotional intelligence allows people to understand the feelings of other people. A person with emotional intelligence relates well with other people and can manage their emotions by having high self-confidence and intrinsic motivation. In the “EQ at a Glace” assessment, my total EQ (Emotional Quotient) score is 54 that belongs to the above average level that is 51-60. The five types of scores in this category were; Intrapersonal Components, Interpersonal Components, Adaptability Components, Stress Tolerance Components, and General Mood Components. The average of my Interpersonal Score is 3.6. The average of Interpersonal Score 3.3. The average score for the Adaptability was 3.3. My average General Mood, and Stress Tolerance Components were all 4. Both General Mood and Stress Tolerance Components scores were in the high range level. My dominant score for this assessment was Stress Tolerance Components. This indicates that I’m a self-driven person capable of tasks completion even under stressful conditions. I can work persistently even when there is dim optimism, I never give up. At the beginning of last semester, I had a lot of work juggling between family, work and study. I had signed up for a new course when I got a job promotion that required me to take up a lot of my time. This left me with no time for me or my family. However, I struggled persistently until I was able to balance my work, give my family quality time and still manage to get A’s for my course. The least dominant score for this assessment is Adaptability Components. I got a 3.3 for this assessment. I have difficulties adapting to different situations in the short run and this ends up wasting a lot of my time and resources. At the beginning of this course, my friends felt that I was much suited for it and will get great scores, but I was very pessimistic until I proved myself wrong by performing excellently. My action plan for this assessment will involve activities and a plan that will help me in better decision making that will enhance my self-motivation and increase my optimism. I will record all my tasks and activities I have to sign up for, and then analyze the disadvantage of optimism against the disadvantages of pessimism. This will improve my decision making by reducing my weakness. Leadership style There are different leadership styles that illustrate how different authorities and power relate to other people. A leader is tasked with the responsibility of organizing activities and the human resource towards attainment of a goal. Good leadership is influential in generation of ideas and solutions to a wide range of problems through decision making. This assessment involved two scores; “relationship behavior” and “task behavior”. My scores of the “relationship behavior” was 16, and my score for “task behavior” was 8. “Relationship behavior” refers to the facilitation of goal achievement through corporation of different people. On the other hand, “task behavior” refers to motivation of the team members, satisfaction and their perception about the team. My score for the “relationship behavior” belonged to the highest level of the score and was my dominant score. I have the ability to relate well with people. I have good relationships with different people, with my colleagues, family and neighbors. I understand them easily and cope with everyone’s comfort. Furthermore, I’m a team leader and a player. During the last summer semester, I was required to work with a group of students who had diverse ideas and was always conflicting with each other. My role as a team player helped calm them and bring them closer by encouraging them to respect other’s contribution and to be more accommodating. The group became very productive as we scored an A in the project. My least dominant score was “task behavior”. I got an 8 that was below the high level of 10. This is because I spend most of the time encouraging others, setting up plans that can effectively deliver goals, solving conflicts, checking on punctuality of members and their contribution to the group. This is to ensure that everyone gains something and not only a part of the group contribute towards the final grade. I realize that I don’t do enough to direct the group on the guidelines required to timely completion of assignments. My action plan for the “task behavior” involves setting up a strategy that will allow me to not only set out that is required to be done, but most importantly, HOW it should be done. This will not only save time for the group, but it will reduce a lot of distractions that lead conflicts in the group. Personal style inventory Personal style inventory relates to normal human differences. People are different and their personalities are also different. An understanding of personal style inventory is important in the development of self-growth and creation of awareness. It is also influential in allowing people to have good relationships as it assists people to discover normal difference in other people, their strengths, potential and weaknesses. For my Personal style inventory assessment, my total score for “introversion” is 23; my total score for “extraversion” is 17; my total score for “intuition” is 11; my total score for “sensing” is 29; my total score for “thinking” is 27; my total score for “feeling: is 13; my total score for “perceiving” is 20, my and total score for “judging” is 20. SO, my personality signature is: I, S, T, J. This means that I’m an introverted person, a sensing type, a great thinker and a judging type. The most dominant score is sensing. This means that I like to evaluate and reason out before making any decision. I analyze the consequences and the benefits of undertaking something guided by my senses. I’m definitely a sensing person. When I was in college, we got a new teacher who looked very confident teaching technology. I had a prior experience about the topic with my brother who showed me how to use the technology. However, the teacher spent the whole lesson talking about a different thing and I was very tempted during the whole lesson to correct him. However, being new, I contained myself. As a senser, I could not point out his inaccuracy before the whole class but I had to wait until the class. When I approached him and told him about it, he humbly appreciated my gesture. Intuitions are my least dominant score in this assessment. I have trouble listening to my intuition especially where I sense something negative as I struggle so hard to be an optimist. During my last assignment, there were different choices of questions to be answered for the final score. I was torn between two questions that I had enough competence to answer. However, my guts directed me towards a question that looked technical than the other one. I went the opposite way as I felt it will take me less time to finish. However, when the results came, I was very disappointed. On my correction, I chose the other one and very easily, I got an A. I realized that listening to my intuitions will help me make better judgment. To improve my personal styles, my action plan will involve listening more to my intuition when I have a strong gut feeling about something. I will write down my thought as they conflict inside my mind, and then take time to analyze them so that I do not ignore my intuition when pursuing my senses and thinking. Transactional Communications (Ego State Questionnaire) Transactional communication is effective in disseminating the true meaning of something when a person says something they don’t mean. People often say things they do not mean for different reasons. To be a great transactional communicator, one should understand, analyze and improve communication when conversing with other people. This leads to resolution of many problems that are caused by communication. This assessment was done using the “Ego State Questionnaire”. This questionnaire provides information about the ego state of mind someone is likely to operate on. On my scores for this assessment, I have got 10 on “Controlling Parent” (CP), 18 on (NP) “Nurturing Parent”, 11 on (A) “Adult”, 15 on (NC) “Natural Child”, 7 on (LP) “Little Professor” and 15 on (AC) “Adapted Child”. My dominating score for this assessment was a nurturing parent that I scored 18. A nurturing parent is warm, loving and accommodating to the child. I believe that a child is endowed with different capabilities and talent that should be nurtured by motivating the child to explore and discover things by themselves as opposed to imposing instructions on them. My niece has always loved to be independent since she was 5years old. She has always been opposed to the idea of someone feeding her, washing for her and directing her as she wanted to do everything by herself. I took her to a vacation during summer when she was six. Every time she wanted to walk alone, I would allow her and follow from afar and I realized she was able to master direction easily. By the time, we got back home, my sister realized that her daughter was really changed in just six months and she was more independent and capable of taking good care of herself. My least preferred score was a “Little Professor”. In the case of my niece, I would hate to impose something she does not want or prevent her from exploring and discovering things by herself. This is because such behavior will imply that I don’t trust her and she won’t trust me either. My giving her an opportunity to express herself while ensuring her safety is the best strategy for a healthy growth. Giving her an opportunity to explore is an effective way to enhance her natural learning. My plan to improve transactional Communication will be characterized by efforts to improve the clarity of my ideas when communicating to people. This is because transactional communication comprises of many conflicts some of that arise out of petty issues that can be clarified easily. I will give more opportunities for people to express themselves to me to ensure that I understand them and they understand me as well. Communicating Effectively (A survey of Communication/Interpersonal Style) Effective listening requires speakers to take time to understand each other’s feelings. Ideas, thoughts and feelings are expressed precisely and clearly so as to assist people to cope with different undesirable emotions. For this assessment, there are two scores in the Communication/Interpersonal Style assessment: a “Stressful Conditions” (SC) score and a “Favorable Conditions” (FC) score. There are four types: “I” refers to “Intuitor,” “T” refers to “Thinker,” “F” refers to “Feeler,” and “D” refers to “Doer.” Under stressful conditions, my score for “Intuitor” was 28, the “Thinker” score was 13; the “Feeler” score was 24, and the “Doer” score was 25. This result can indicate that I am more likely to be a thinker under stressful conditions; for the favorable conditions the “Intuitor” score was 25, the “Thinker” score was 17, the “Feeler” score was 24, and the “Doer” score was 24. When operating under normal conditions, I’m likely to be a “Thinker”. I’m very creative and very likely to think in abstract and concrete way in order to keep improving my life and that of others around me. When I was in college, I was a group leader and this entailed that I come up with effective ways of doing our assignments competently. Once we had to perform a field work to collect different types of vegetation for our biology assignment. As a thinker, I directed my team to use a different method of sampling that the teacher had not taught us. We were able to finish the assignment very fast and our results were the best. The least preferred state I’m likely to operate on is an “Intuitor”. I’m least likely to operate as an intuitor because I’m not I have a hard time with innovative ideas and creativity. When I was in the university, mathematics was very challenging and I could not think of a solution for challenges that the teacher had not taught us. I was not creative with my challenges and therefore, in most cases, I relied on studying the examples when solving my math’s problems instead of reasoning the answer. In the future, I want to devise a plan to help me become an intuitor. I plan to focus my attention in finding solutions that are not obvious, through creativity and innovativeness. Every time I’m faced with a challenge, I plan to write down all the possible solutions rather than only paying attention to one obvious solutions there is. I will exercise a lot and read materials that will help me build my intuitive capacity. Exploring and Understanding Values (Current Values) Exploring and understanding values helps people appreciate their values and those of others in the society. The way of thinking of different people is based on their values and beliefs. As such, understanding the value systems of different people in the society is instrumental in the enhancement of effective communication and peaceful con-existence. In this assessment, there are four types of value systems: “Traditionalist,” “In-Betweener,” “Challenger,” and “Synthesizer.” I scored 31 for “traditionalist,” 28 for “in-betweener,” 30 for “challenger” and 34 on “synthesizer.” My highest score was on the “synthesizer” where I scored 34 while my lowest was “in-betweener” with a score of 28. My most dominant score was a “synthesizer”. This is because I’m always motivated to do what my heart desires, make myself happy and also do well to other people by using flexible actions to reduce conflicts and restore justice. One day I found two boys fighting over a bicycle. They were brother about 6 years old. One had given out their bicycles but could not remember and so they were blaming each other. When I confronted them, I asked them to remember who could have taken the bicycle after reaching an understanding that neither of them knew where the bicycle. Together they listed down all the people who were interested in the bicycle and they went looking for it. They found the bicycle and they were very happy the conflict was solved and then bicycle returned. “In-Betweener” was my least preferred score. When handling issues and resolving conflict, I do not find myself in the middle of the case as it take a periphery position and allow the parties involved in a conflict to solve their problems and only serve the mediating role. Like the case of the two boys, I proposed a solution that will help them solve the problem, but I was not directly involved. In this case, I endeavor to develop more on being a “synthesizer” as it is an effective method of helping people learn to solve their won problems. Read More
