? Introduction to Art Art is a product of the mind, as per many scholars and experts. Indeed it can be regarded as a way by which things present in this world are being arranged, so as to create some meaning to the onlooker. As a result it has been considered by many experts as a visual process, which gives free flow to an individual’s imagination. Because of this the art and artists are considered to be related very close to nature. Most people consider it as a way to bring out the creativity that is locked in the mind. Since it gives much happiness to its creator, as well as the people who look at it, art has been practiced ever since ancient times and its roots have been drawn way back to the prehistoric times. The cave paintings and drawings of the ancient civilisations and the various forms of artefacts that have been dug out from the ruins of ancient civilisations, are very good examples of this. These show very good proof that; even the people from those days were interested in art and its various forms. As per the varieties of art almost all the fields ranging from paintings to the areas of literature and music, are all considered to fall under the category of art. Indeed to the practicing artist and the sculptors or any individual who indulges in the creation of art and its various forms, it is a wonderful medium to express what is hidden within them. Hence art is considered by the experts, as the one which stimulates the inner feelings and brings out the hidden emotions, of both its creator and also its onlookers. For many art is a form of happiness and pleasure, that takes them to an imaginative field, where they are free from all worldly troubles. Because of this many people who cannot create forms of art but appreciate art, tend to buy pieces of art for their homes and work places. In today’s world because of this trend, buying works of art have become a very lucrative and serious business. The artists, painters and sculptors stand to benefit from this growing trend of art business, which enables them to make a living and some of them even reap millions. Art in recent years have become very good medium for investment. The paintings and sculptures, which are produced by the great masters, are today auctioned at the various auction houses spread across the world, for billions of dollars. Through the business of art, people are now indeed making a fortune. People who indulge in any form of art are considered to be highly talented, since they give freedom and form to their hidden energies. It is for this reason that, almost any person who indulges in any form of art is considered in high esteem by the public. Experts believe that almost all the human beings have the talent to create art forms. But it is only the individuals who put in efforts to bring out their creativity, who are able to express the art forms in reality. The practice of art is in itself a very time consuming process and in most cases it is through years of dedication, which makes individuals to become true masters of the art forms, they practice. For this very reason, most of the individuals in today’s world find art as a mere wastage of time, energy and money. But this very thought is not correct, since it helps an individual to master the inner self, through the medium of art. In today’s fast paced life indulgence in art is very important as per many experts, since they believe that, it helps the people to relax and help them to take a break from the vagaries of modern life. This is the main reason that, most of the schools and colleges in the world today make it a point to conduct classes and sessions of art for the students, so as to make them aware regarding the world of art. It is through such initiation that, many highly talented artists take roots by understanding its hidden secrets. Thus such students get exposed to the art field and they become drawn to the medium of art. Among them many become art teachers and dedicate themselves to teaching the various art forms, to the future generations. Art has indeed revolutionised the whole world and has from time immemorial, taken control of the public imagination. Thus art brings about meaning to the many objects, which are otherwise considered as ordinary in today’s world. As a result an ordinary glass for example, could very well be turned into a piece of art, if a painting is done on it. Thus the onlooker could create several meanings for such art pieces. Art helps the artists to communicate to the whole world, what they feel about a particular piece of art they have created. The hidden idea and their viewpoints are clearly expressed through the medium of art and because of this, it is considered as a very powerful form of medium, for the expression of an individual’s inner feelings. The message that is passed by the various art forms could be interpreted in many different ways by the audience or the onlooker and it totally depends on their emotions. This makes art a very important means of mass communication, since it can be viewed by millions of people in the world, through the medium of photography and mass media simultaneously. Areas of art like photography and films have been considered by experts as an excellent and wonderful medium, which can stir the emotions of people all at once and make them to act, depending on the visuals they get to see. Because of this very reason, these two mediums along with literature have become important tools for mass communication, in the modern world. The advent of the internet has given another great impetus to the field of art. Today’s artist can reach millions of people around the world, through the medium of the World Wide Web at a very negligible cost and can exhibit their works of art, to every nook and corner of the world. Online art galleries have made it possible for the artists, to get a very large audience who are interested in their works of art and enjoy the benefit of appreciation and criticisms of their art works. At the same time it provides a very good platform for the art buyers and sellers to conduct a lucrative art business, sitting in their homes and offices. Art has been appreciated over the internet and there are endless numbers of websites, which deal with art or give the various information’s about art. Because of the internet, artists find it as a very useful medium, so as to showcase their hidden talents and reach out to a large number of people at the same time. The modern world artists are therefore considered very lucky, when compared to their earlier counterparts. The internet revolution has indeed changed the very form of art and has enabled many people to make good use of this form of visual medium. The various forms of art, which are being viewed by the public, help the millions of artists all over the world, to showcase their hidden talents to the rest of the world. Art in general has undergone a great transition from the prehistoric times till date. Millions of art works have originated in the world till now and every day, there are numerous additions to the field of art. These works of art have either lots of stories, that are embedded in them or they could be simply a form of reflection of the artists mind. Hence it is out of the complex thinking process of the artists, which a work of art comes into being. Indeed if it was not through the arduous mental process, the art would not have taken its form into the world. As a result, the pieces of art sometimes tells secrets of a period of time, when they were created. The best examples for this are the cave paintings as well as the drawings of the prehistoric man. It reflects the life of the prehistoric man, their way of life, the animals that they hunted for food and their traditions, all of which have been intelligently depicted in their art works. The same way the paintings which come as a division of art, have their own time period and they have been classified as Renaissance, Victorian and many others. By looking into paintings the historians or any layman could very well understand the customs, the tradition and the costumes of men and women, during that time period. Thus everything has been very well embodied and included in those paintings. Another form of art, Photography also has the same kind of effect on the audience and the onlookers. This is because it has the ability to capture the various moments of that time period and exhibit before the modern mankind, reflecting the lifestyles and traditions of that time period. But when compared to the paintings, photography has got much more freedom and is able to cover a wider network of people. Since paintings have to be either commissioned or is a product of creativity of an artist, it has got its own limitations. The limitations have been much due to the fact that, considerable amount of time is required to complete the paintings and also that considerable money has to be spent, in the production of the art works. But photography does not cost much and is also very easy to get pictures of places and people. The film is another section of art, which has its own way of showcasing the lifestyle of a particular period. Indeed the advent of the film and the movies into the field of art, has made it a very good platform for showcasing the talents of many people, who are involved in the whole process of making movies and acting in them. Movies also help to reflect and give a broader perspective of the society. Movies like photography, helps realise the true form and expression of art and helps the artists in their expression of thought and bring out their latent talents. Art has been classified as craft or as commercial form of art, based on the purpose for which it has been utilised. Crafts have been associated with the form of art, which have been created only for the practical and individual use. If the same craft is being used for making money, then it becomes what is being termed as commercial art. In today’s modern world, most of the art works are being created or being performed, with a commercial point of view. Thus all these forms of paintings, photography and many others can very well be clubbed together and put into one heading called as visual art. Visual art is thus one which has in itself a form of movement. It can stir the emotions of any human being, who creates and looks at it. The visual pleasure that one gets by seeing works of visual art cannot be described, since it soothes the mind. Because of this reason, art is presently considered to have medicinal and curative properties. Research is being carried out in many places of the world, to study the effect that art has got on the health of patients. This form of branch of medicinal science is called as art therapy and is found to have true healing properties. Indeed it is found to cure people with all sorts of ailments, ranging from simple stress related problems to the cure of cancer. The doctors and physicians who are involved in this form of art therapy are of the opinion that, the patients who have been administered this form treatment, show very positive results and are very much found to get cured of their medical ailments very quickly. It is quite astonishing to find that, even in the case of the patients suffering from cancer, have shown amazing recovery from their medical conditions. (www.ezilon.com) Physicians believe that it is due to the reason of involving in art related activities, soothes the brain and causes mental relaxation and makes the whole mind and body, quite receptive to the medical treatments that they are being administered. Thus the art has got its own positive and beneficial side. Initial studies have shown so much positive effect due the curative properties of art and because of this, more and more researchers are teaming up all over the world, to conduct more in-depth research about the same subject. (www.ezilon.com) Music is also a form of art. Music has been long considered as the medium of expressing the hidden human emotions. Music can be enabled through the form of any musical instrument or through the human voice. Music has also attracted millions of people around the world, since it soothes the nerves and gives very good mental pleasure for the individual who hears it. As a result music is also considered by experts to have curative properties. (www.ezilon.com) It has been proved by the medical community that, certain forms of music are found to cause a decrease in the blood pressure of patients and soothes their nerves. This field of medicine is called as music therapy and has come into practice for the past several years. Patients, who have been made to undergo music sessions, have been found to undergo an astounding recovery from their ailments, which proves the medicinal quality, which music is entrusted with. In recent years several researchers have taken up serious research in this particular field, which has given them wonderful results. (www.ezilon.com) Because of the recent impetus that is being given by the governments towards the teaching and the practicing of the various forms of arts for its citizens, many art schools have originated in various parts of the world. The main focus of most of these art schools is not only to commercialise the field of art through teaching but also to impart quality into their teaching methods and bring out the best hidden talents within the students. Quality art education is their main aim and it is with this idea, that the government also funds such private schools and organisations, to impart good art education to the masses. Indeed art schools are the real creators and the mentors to the future generation of artists of the world. If it was not for them, then the world would have not got a platform for catering to the needs of the art field and many of the artists would not have got a kick-start to their careers in the arena of art. Because of this very reason it can be said that, the art schools are doing a highly commendable job in nurturing young minds and have been a motivating force for the artistic community of the world. Art galleries are another form of place, which helps artists to exhibit their art works. But it is considered by critics and experts as the place where only the highly talented, can showcase their works of art. Today there are numerous number of art galleries around the world, which function with the sole aim of exhibiting the works of art, of countless number of artists. Since art galleries have become a hub of activity for the artists, art buyers and sellers of art also gather in such places, to make it a commercial platform. Indeed it is these art galleries, which are being flooded by millions of art lovers whenever an exhibition takes place. It becomes thus a place, where the artist can discuss with the art lovers about the art forms, they have exhibited. This takes place in the form of art sessions, which are usually conducted during the course of the art exhibitions. People inclined in art, can thus learn about the various forms of art during such art exhibitions and at the same time, become much aware of what goes into the process of creation of the art works. Thus it is the aesthetic nature of the art, which attracts people towards this field. In this world till now there have been several movements in art, which have brought about several types of revolutions in the area of art. It is found that, all these movements had its origins when several group of artists, combined together to march forward to put their thought, imaginations and ideas into the field of art. It has been only because of such art movements, that there has been a tremendous improvement and development, which has taken place in the field of art. Only because of the art movements and revolutions, the various forms of art have taken its origins. If it was not for the various art movements that had taken place in history, the field of art would have become extinct from the face of earth. The field of art has given rise to another set of individuals, who have been termed as the art critics. These are a set of individuals who involve themselves, in the process of evaluation of various forms of art. Thus they give their own views about a particular piece of art and also give their comments about the artists, who have created the art works. Indeed it is due to their critical opinions regarding the various art forms, which they force the artists to realise how important it is for them to create perfect art forms. Mostly because of the various critical reviews that they present before the public and the world, they are not much welcome in the art circles. Because of this reason, it is very difficult for critics to present their views about art. But they have become a very important part in today’s world of art. Art critics are today being employed by many companies around the world, for presenting their critical reviews about pieces of art. Indeed many works of art in this world would have gone unnoticed to the modern society, if it was not for the views laid down by the art critics. Another group of individuals, who have been pillars for unravelling the ancient art forms and bring it in front of the public, have been the archaeologists. Their main aim is to look for hidden art forms of ancient civilisations. Indeed it is through such findings, that most of the prehistoric artefacts have been discovered and presented before the public. The best example of this is the case of the ancient mummies, which have been hidden from the view of the public for several decades, until it was at last unearthed by the archaeologists. The profession of the archaeologists is also not an easy one and they have to encounter and undergo many risks, which can even cause a risk to their lives during the process of discovering the hidden art forms. Museums around the world have been another great place, where art lovers can find many forms of art. It is the museums which help in the collection of art works of a particular place and exhibits, preserves the same for the public, to view and enjoy the various forms of art. If it was not for the museums, many of the masterpieces in the field of art would have otherwise been ruined. In the past, the museums were funded by the emperors as well as the rulers of several countries, who patronised the various forms of art. It was they who commissioned and funded the various artists and painters of their countries and made them world famous. But presently most of the museums are run by the governments of various countries and their maintenance and renovations, are taken up by means of private and public funding. There had been many movements that had taken place in the field of art. These have been broadly classified and studied by art historians and given names, which ranges from Impressionism, Expressionism and to what is being called presently as Modern art. While the Impressionist artists had been keener in creating art works and paintings based on the play of light and shades on various objects, the Expressionist artists were keen on the beauty and decorative purpose of the objects. As a result such art forms produced by the Expressionists have concentrated much on items like jewels and furniture. Modern Art which has been the recent trend in the field of art, has been focussing more on the different form of paintings, as well as the sculptures produced by the artists. Pop art as well as the abstract arts has also been the modern trends in art. Conclusion Thus art till date has been found to be an ongoing creative process, which has got no ends and which will continue till the end of the world. As long as human’s beings are alive it can very well be concluded that, art and its multitude of forms, will remain and revolutionise the life on earth.
