With the use of high-definition cameras, macabre movies seem to be very real and this adds to the excitement viewers experience when watching horror films. With such kind of reaction and patronage of scary movies, many people wonder what is it in this kind of film that attract people and make them enjoy the thrill in something which should be avoided instead. Richard Sine addresses this issue in his article entitled, “Why We Love Scary Movies” (2007) and recommends a number of theories about why people love to watch scary movies.

In the aforementioned article, the author tries to find sensible answers as to why people want to watch gruesome movies even though there are better movies, ones that are helpful in behavioral development, to watch. One thing he suggests is the innate desire of males to “master threatening situations” (Sine 2007). The writer claims that tribal ancestors practiced gruesome practices as a part of making young males enter manhood. He explains that since such initiation rites have become obsolete and are rather considered by modern people as barbaric, a substitute has to be had.

That substitute is watching chilling movies. When males are able to watch scary movies without freaking out, it is said that this is the equivalent of overcoming fear and trials during an initiation rite. Therefore, the author suggests that from this perspective, when the movie is immensely creepy, young males will feel prouder about themselves thinking that they are courageous enough to be able to face such kinds of eerie shows. This is the reason why extremely terrifying movies are becoming more and more popular.

It is believed that it proves a person’s courage. The reason mentioned above may make some sense but there are also absurd judgments as to why people patronize scary movies. One suggestion is because “adults frown on them”, referring to scary movies. At a glance, this kind
