Task If On A Winter's Night A Traveler by Italo Calvino Introduction In If on a Winter’s Night a Traveler, Italo Calvino tries to bring into focus the reader’s attention to the words of the other authors in order to eliminate the barrier of restrictions towards a single story within a wide context of the provided materials. The author also manages to expose the readers to the kind of entertainment that has threats with the sole goal of preserving the much-needed pleasure by the readers. Through versatility, Calvino manages to accomplish most of what has been explored in the essay. The other ways in which he author manages to preserve pleasure within the novel include characterization and a clear description of the setting. Though Calvino wrote the story, it comes out as a mixture of works from ten different writers who possess differing styles and themes, therefore, the resourcefulness of the story is what characterizes the style that Calvino portrays in his magnificent work. Resourcefulness in Calvino’s writing portrays his great ability to use similar elements to build up an equally alike story, as well as the utilization of dissimilar elements to build similar stories. He also has the capacity to acclimatize effortlessly to various genres of creative writing. In the novel, Calvino makes extra efforts and finally manages to introduce various numbers of characters that he represents as comic strips, with the major importance of helping in the contrast between them to convey to the reader the dangers that are presented by the uncontrolled academic analysis. Calvino uses a dialogue as a tool to allow effective portray of the comic strips. This becomes possible through the direct, as well as indirect stating of the philosophies of both presented characters. In this context, Calvino illustrates the two caricatures as Non Reader, Lotaria, and the Other reader all the way through their individual words and presents the reader to judge them (Calvino 26). During this stage, two other types of readers are established; it sets off how even the usual analysis of the Reader is cleared by an exact collection of interests and wishes. First, Calvino brings in Ludmilla's sister, Lotaria, the functional Reader who needs only to know the author's place with view to Trends of Contemporary Thought and Problems That Demand a Solution. Second, he brings in Irnerio, the Non-Reader, who has taught himself not even to study what emerges before his eyes (Calvino 27). Throughout the Reader's communications with these two and with Ludmilla herself, Calvino upholds the volatility near the Reader's pursuit for her. During this stage, the Other Reader is outlying more fascinated in her interpretation, than in his. At the same time, Calvino's exploit of the illustrated audience and the metaphor of reading to illustrate their lovemaking permits the authorial addressees to make a private application of the depiction, if it sees in shape. The author presents criteria through which other readers can be evaluated with the philosophy brought in by Ludmilla who assumes the character of the Other Reader in the novel. The Other Reader has been represented or characterized by the simple and clear answers that she provides to other readers after they ask her questions. The Other Reader is represented as the hero in the novel because she provides reinforcements to the earlier presented idea of taking reading as a kind of entertainment. This is manifested through her desires which, the author suggests, the readers should imitate. The Non reader, who is depicted as Irnerio, offers an overview of his lifestyle where he says that he first had to learn not to read; things have started to change if came automatically without any struggles. According to the author, the expectations are that the reader of his novel will assume that the idea presented upon by Non Reader will appear more of a threat to the experiences of reading, since the novel has on the dialogue (Calvino 49). The author presents the second character who appears to be a total opposite to the Non Reader. According to Calvin, Lotaria can be described as a well-read, well-educated individual within their discussion group in the fields of languages and literature (Calvino 137). Ludmilla’s wants are consistently fulfilled by the way of reading and the openness to a collection of experiences, Her enchantment in reading for reading's sake, her outstanding recall of what she has read, has been presented as higher to the Reader's (Calvino 254). The character is much more similar to the Non Reader, Irnerio, but a certain trait that she depicts through her opinions suggests otherwise. With the prevailing evidence, the readers of the novel by Calvino help us to comprehend that both Lotaria and Irnerio have more concerns on the words in the novel, rather than giving a glance at the final meaning that gets conveyed or to be more precise the pleasure that the readers obtain in reading the novel (Calvino 91). The comparison between Lotaria and Irnerio presents the danger of exposures to the excesses of academic analysis, giving a clear idea of how the pleasure obtained during reading is endangered. By the use of these methods, the author manages to characterize through the utilization of a simple dialogue. This leads to the creation of reader caricatures that act as a way of giving a clear contrast of the two characters with the aim of demonstrating the risks presented with the use of unrestricted academic analysis. Using the combination, that is both the novel and the sections by utilization of direct address of the reader and by the utilization of clear or vivid descriptions, the author manages to create a clear setting that attracts the readers and makes the reading action a better experience. Ludmilla's being good at recalling whatever she reads, having a better understanding of what she reads, being a well educated character do not get or aim for what the other readers aim. We are informed that she reads just for the sake of reading. The outstanding abilities she possesses, however, make her to be seen way above the other readers in the story. This helps the readers to have a better distinction of the unrestrained academic analysis. The idea is brought out well by the use of the two characters' caricatures or comic strips, just as the author intended to bring out the issue into attention of the other readers of his novel. The readers and the Other Reader have different things in mind, since one character just wants to read and be immersed into the story, be able to become a part of the story in the novel and manage to narrate the same story to someone else in a better way. However, for the other reader, the main aim or the priority is just to read and understand the concept without being immersed into the story. There the two readers have different ways of being acquainted with the story, as proposed by the author of the novel. The readers have different roles in the novel and the same may apply to all other readers, that is, different readers presents different approaches in the story. Some read the novel for the sake of reading while other read to get inside the story, analyze it, capture all the concepts so that they have a better position in pursue the story and even be able to narrate it to the other people. The fact that the author switches to a lesser sensational and contemplative mode helps in the reinforcement of the possibility of having the dangers of too much or excessive analysis being presented. According to the author, this threatens to make the interpretations of the work invalid, which depends upon the previous styles or other works by the author (Calvino 133). Conclusion The author attempts to obtain the attention offered by the readers as a way of trying to alter their focus from the actual reading words of the novel. He directs their attention or focus to the life that the words try to demonstrate through the utilization of various styles. The styles that the author greatly utilizes are the establishment of the characterization and how he manages to establish the setting of the whole story. The author needs the readers to understand the risks of entertainments when considering reading, and needs the readers to recognize the sources of these dangers. They have an origin from lack of moderation and surplus of the academic group. References Calvino, Italo. If on a Winter's Night a Traveler. New York: Harcourt Brace, 1981. Print. Read More
