Introduction Fibre optic network has been a technology that will be using the glass or plastic threads that will be used to transmit the data and the fibre optic cable has been consisted to a bundle of glass that has been capable of transmitting message using light waves. The Fibre optics would be using light rather than electricity in transmitting data. (Telecommunication Infrastructures in Australia 2001) The electrical signal would be converted to light and released through the fibre and the light would be bouncing through the inner silica shield that would be named cladding. There will be a receiver that would be converting the light back to electricity and there have been several advantages that the fibre optics will be giving. The Fibre optic cables have been seen as having a greater bandwidth than metal cables. That will help in carrying more data. The Fibre optic cables have been seen as having less susceptible than metal cables when it comes to interference. The other advantage is that it is much thinner and lighter than metal wires. The data would be transmitted digitally through the natural form and that would be useful for computer data. That would mean a change in the analogical mode that has been used. The Fibre optic cable has been used in the network and that has been the network that has been interconnecting telephone switches and data centres. The main advantage is that it has been used in the transmission media as the information has been carried as optical pulses and that means there has been no electrical pulses like in the twisted pair. That can give the additional advantage of crosstalk, noise, interference.( Telecommunication Infrastructures in Australia 2001 The other big advantage is that there has been delivery of information over the copper and that can be done in long distance. There has been a large bandwidth in carrying information and FTTH or FTTP, Fibre to the Premises, will be bringing the service closer to the consumers. The service that has been offered by FTTH network would include VoIP, lifeline POTS, RF video, MPEG video, IPTV, HDTV, video-on-demand, pay-per-view, high speed Internet, and numerous other services. That means FTTH has been the choice for delivering service like voice, video, and data. (Telecommunication Infrastructures in Australia 2001) The aim of the essay is to cover on the issue of Australia’s National Broadband Network. This is a Federal government initiative to supply high speed broadband internet access to most houses/buildings in Australia. The majority will be via Fibre to the Home (FTTH) which would provide speeds of 100Mbits per second. The essay will be covering the issue of Fibre optical service to South Korea, Japan and Australia. The essay would be reviewing of existing high speed internet access in South Korea, the benefits it has brought, and the benefits that have been touted for this system and whether they are realistic. High Broadband Connectivity, Fastest International Countries(Ek Heng,2009) The Australian government-backed FTTP based solution has been proposed to deliver a 100 Mbps FTTP service to 90% of Australian households, schools, and businesses over the next eight years. There has been a report that the Australian government initiative in the National Broadband network would be putting the country on par with the world leaders in internet speed but the country in reality would be still years behind the internet pace. That does not mean that the initiative in the form of fibre to the home and 100 Mbps to the 90% of the premises would be taking the Australian economy forward. The biggest threat that may be facing this project would be the government role in ensuring that the project meets the desired end and that can also mean a change in the government should not be affecting the project. There has to be availability of the capital for the projects as the project cost can be high and the government funding will help in managing the situation for a part and that need not be ignored. The future of the broadband can be said as to be having in fibre and that will be the one that will be supporting the increasing presence of bandwidth heavy consumer applications. The majority of fibre broadband enabled countries are in Europe and in Asia. It has been reported that at least 51 % of the South Korean household would be having fibre connection and looking at the figure one, it can be noted that Japan,HongKong,Taiwan and Lithuania has been following the leader. There has been a report that Singapore would be overtaking South Korea for the number one position by the year 2013 and that will be possible because of the government initiative in taking the “iN2015” initiative. That would mean a construction of 1 gbps fibre and that would be connected to the FTP network. There has been a report that the proposed network by Australia would be taking the country forward and will take it to the eight place provided other countries do not do anything to the existing system. Review of existing high speed internet access in other countries - what benefits has it brought There has been a question of getting high internet access and the country that has been in the top of the charts has been South Korea and that has been made possible mainly by the fact that the government of South Korea had the necessary reserves to fund up the process and they have been able to develop a broadband communication system and the South Korean development was mainly made possible by the fact that a large population was based in the urban area. That had helped the development of broadband communication system that has been based on the fibre optics and the country has been providing a minimum 100 MB/s service. It has been seen that at least 95% of the homes has access to the service and the county has been able to achieve the 100 % access by the year of 2012. South Korea has been continuing the commanding lead in the internet market and Korea has been considered as a leader in broadband diffusion. The Korean IT infrastructure is meant to change by 2012.The high speed internet service would be changing the 1 GBPS service 10 times faster than the current service and Wireless broadband service would be providing the 10 MBPs service and that has been considered as the 10 times faster than the current service.The service would be throwing forward a high speed definition TV and can mean the images would be 16 times clearer than the present images. The service would be making the South Koreans to watch I-Max films on home TVs and digital TV would be covering 96 percent in 2012 from the current 87 percent and that would mean the technological changes would be bringing change in the digital world. South Korea has been estimated as the country having the largest number of subscribers to broadband service in the world and that has been challenged by the Singapore. It has been seen that Fibre-optic Internet connections has hit 7 million in Japan by the year end 2006.The data has been released by Japan's Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) .The fibre optic service has been low cost and has been offered by many carriers throughout Japan. That has helped the growth of broadband Internet market. The data has also released and it has shown that 7.2 million of the Japans 25 million broadband subscribers have been using fibre-optic connections.( Martyn Williams ,2006) The fibre service has been offered by NTT East Corp that has been charging ¥5,200 and there would be additional charge of ¥1,000. The competition has been fierce and there have been good promotions. The service would be installed within two weeks of ordering. There would be no charge for first several months. The Fibre optic connections are normally 100M bps (bits per second) that would be dedicated or shared between a small numbers of households. That had seen a net gain of 848,953 subscriptions from the previous year. That has also meant that fibre-optic connections have been compared with ADSL market and it has been equivalent to about half the total ADSL market. The ADSL has been available with speeds taking up to 47M bps.The third in the Japan has been the cable Internet subscriptions that has been hovering at 3.5 million and the fourth place has been fixed wireless access, which is only available in limited areas and had 10,954 subscribers.( Martyn Williams ,2006) What are the benefits that have been touted for this system? Are they realistic? There will be a total spending of 34.1 trillion .The spending would be done in next five years. The government would be contributing 1.3 trillion and the rest of the contribution from the private player. The project would be expected to create 120,000 jobs. South Korea was the first nation in the world to commercially launch broadband Internet in 1999. The plan that was done was the Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL).South Korea has been building on the high-speed broadband Internet highway and has reached apposition by which every country has been striving to overtake South Korea. South Korean telecom density was not developed in the 80s and the growth of internet broadband service had developed the e-government infrastructure and e-commerce ad internet services. The South Korea has been the first to launch the commercial satellite digital multimedia broadcasting service in the year 2005 and that has helped the mobile users to watch the television while travelling and the country has been pioneer in 3 G broadband service and South Korea has gone forward by developing 4 G service .The advantage that South Korea had was that the increased international market share in the form of 47 percent of global memory semiconductor market,41 percent of LCD market,22 percent of the digital market. The biggest advantage was in the form of increased speed as that has been facilitating the output of the wireless technologies by 20 times and that will be three times more than the existing technologies. The advantage has been that there has been transfer of more than half of the rich media through the internet and that has meant that South Korea has been ranked on the top globally with an average of 15 Mbps. The figure has shown that the figure has been 10 times faster than the global average. The other advantage has been that low price for the public sector and free Internet service for schools. The other advantage has been the IT education. The other advantage has been that South Korea has reached a market share of 95 percent penetration in mobile subscription and broadband Internet usage had reached the 73 percent, and the internet use of the 90 percent of households. South Korea has been the one to take advantage of the CDMA technology and South Korea has reached the pioneer in the 3 G broad band service and country had 40 percent usage in mobile broadband. (Om Malik, 2009) The International Telecommunication Union has said that "In South Korea, the government has practiced a very IT-focused policy, making it one of its priorities, resulting in faster evolution towards the information society,"( Om Malik,2009) Figure four: Economies with the Highest Penetration of Fibre-to-the-Home/Building+LAN).( Ek Heng,2009) Proposals, draw conclusions; list your choices about a direction that should be taken The topic of the essay has shown the advantage that South Korea and Japan has been able to reach due to the usage of fibre optic technology and it has been seen that countries like Singapore has been planning to pump large financial amounts to take on the market leader South Korea. It is in this background that the position of Australia should not be forgotten. Australia has been relying on slower systems and that can affect the growth of knowledge society and there has to be correct measures for that. The fibre optic technology for home would be increasing the economic power of Australia as the web based service would be helpful in taking the business segments forward and it would be helpful in also taking the knowledge segment forward as there can be many research and other things that can be done using the high speed technology. The other advantage that will be given out globally would be the fact that the perception of Australia globally would be helping other international investors to feel safe about the data retrieval and data sending and that would be helping the investors to have an investment. The other advantage would be that Australia would be able to penetrate into the top ten of the fibre internet nations and that also would be helpful in attracting more investors.
