Although physicians and surgeons seem to play the role of leader in majority of countries, especially developing nations such as that of Oman, however, findings of different studies have indicated the greater role of nurses in ensuring recovery of the patients. In other words, nurses act as partners, companions, guardians, concierges while taking special care of their patients (Crisp et. al., 2005). One can come across countless case studies that indicate extraordinary role of nurses in critical circumstances, and thus, it deserves significant importance, as well as demand in the form of education and its status as a profession that is not up to the expectations. Objectives From this understanding, the researcher has planned to carry out a study with the following aims and objectives: Identify and examine the role of nursing in nurturing and caring of patients, particularly, in extreme circumstances Inspect the extent of importance and status of nursing profession in Oman Scrutinize status and importance of the nursing in clinical education in Oman Recognize and recommend strategies that may ensure positive transformation of the role and status of nursing in Oman Research Statement In this regard, the researcher will focus on the following research statement to fulfill the aims and objectives of the research: “Analysis of role of nurses in critical care units, and emphasis on impact of in-service clinical education to alter the status of nurses from followers to leaders in the Sultanate of Oman” Significance During job as a clinical nurse specialist, the researcher came across several instances where he observed the significant role of nurses in extraordinary circumstances (it will be better if you add one example that you have experienced), such as that in emergency departments, intensive care units, etc. However, during such experiences, it was an observation that these experiences were nothing like that is usually mentioned in nurses’ theoretical framework in Oman, and there is an urgent need of efficient in-service clinical nursing education. In other words, it is an understanding that the role of nursing as a profession, as well as their status and character needs alteration in the context of Omani healthcare environments that will be possible by the availability of high-quality in-service clinical nursing education. In this regard, findings and outcomes of the proposed research will act as foundation of such premise that will be beneficial for the new generation of nurses in the country in terms of new opportunities for the acquisition of capabilities and skills required. In addition, it will be advantageous for the government, as it will have the opening to redefine the notion of nursing in the country. PRELIMINARY LITERATURE REVIEW Brief review of the literature (Marquis & Huston, 2008) has indicated that nursing enjoys massive popularity in developed parts of the globe due to its significant role of caring in human lives. However, in developing nations, it still lacks importance, and most importantly, there seems a gap between realistic circumstances and theoretical frameworks existing in clinical nursing education. The basic disparity is that all nurses receive the same nature of education during their learning process; however, it is an observation (Miller, 2008) that when confront realistic healthcare settings, nurses feel disparity between their roles mentioned in theory and the roles in real healthcare environments. This becomes complicated when it comes to emergency departments and critical care units (Timby, 2008). In addition, when it comes to nursing as a profession, literature (Sacks, 2003; Marshall, 2010) indicates inequality, as a huge Omani population does not consider nursing having a complete status of profession that indicates the lacking in in-service clinical nursing education that has been unsuccessful in promoting the role of nurses as leaders. In addition, the system (Nettina, 2006) has been unable to equip nurses with capabilities required for efficiency in critical care circumstances. Thus, there is an urgent need of alteration in the perspectives and approaches of in-service educators that will enable the role of nurses as leaders in the healthcare industry that is currently confronting dominance of physicians and surgeons (Huber, 2006), especially in Omani healthcare industry. METHODOLOGY The proposed research will be a qualitative study that will focus on the nurses of the Sultanate of Oman and its structure of clinical nursing education. As basic objective of the proposed research revolves around the role and status of nurses indicating a social problem, the researcher has selected qualitative paradigm that will enable inquiry and exploration of the findings in a holistic manner in the Sultanate of Oman. In addition, it is an observation that huge numbers of experts (Bethune & Turner, 2010) have carried out research regarding the role and importance of nurses and nursing profession in other parts of the globe that will be useful in understanding the recognized role of nursing in other nations. Thus, these studies (Hiscott, 1998; Nazarko, 2004) and findings will act as theoretical basis for the proposed study that will allow the researcher in avoiding repetition of information and unproductive outcomes. From this perspective, the researcher will be carrying out a literature review to identify and analyze different books, journals, magazines, scholarly articles related to the role of nursing and its status in clinical nursing education. For this function, the researcher will be using public and private libraries to acquire data, and additionally, the tool of Internet will be very effective in finding different scholarly publications related to the identified research statement. However, basic objective of the researcher is not to scrutinize available literature but to ignite a transformation of the status of nursing into a leader rather as a follower, and for this purpose, the researcher will be carrying out primary research method in particular hospitals and healthcare settings in the Sultanate of Oman to acquire data from real healthcare environments. The researcher will be focusing on the experiences of nurses in critical care circumstances working in Omani hospitals while comparing these experiences with different aspects of existing in-service clinical nursing education framework that will facilitate in setting or recommending a benchmark for the nurses in the country theoretically, as well as practically. In particular, the researcher will be taking interviews of nurses in two particular Omani hospitals that will act as case studies for the proposed study. In addition, the researcher will put efforts to arrange interviews of some in-service educators involved in setting up of clinical nursing education in the country that will be very beneficial for the research. For this purpose, the researcher will endeavor to acquire written permission from the ethics committee of the universities, as well as from the hospitals. At the same time, researcher will inform participants about objectives of the proposed study before beginning of the data collection process that will be a way of encouraging truthful answers from the participants and ensuring data integrity. In addition, during the interview, the researcher will ensure that name of the participant remain anonymous in order to avoid any unwilling response during the study. CONCLUSION In particular, the proposal indicates intention of the researcher to bring a change, particularly, in the regulatory organization for nurses in the Sultanate of Oman in terms of the status of nursing as a profession. In addition, the researcher anticipates an alteration in the form of a new framework of in-service education that will be beneficial for the healthcare industry, as well as for education sector of the country. Briefly, the researcher expects that after approval of the research, findings of the proposed study will be an efficient contribution to the world of academia in the form of a published report, and believes that recommendations of the proposed study will play a noteworthy role in enhancing the role of nurses and nursing in the future.
