Sharing economy practices in the business area are increasing at a high rate in modern times. Globalization has become the main driving force that makes global companies share human and economic resources as well as a technology infrastructure (Steger, 2010). In the last two decades, the popularity of international organizations sharing economies has become a culture in various countries. The essence of sharing economies is to exploit underutilized resources and business opportunities in the industries (John, 2013). The existence of physical and shareable resources and sharing motivations are also stimulants of shared assets. In the digital market, sharing economy brings people together with similar goals and objectives within an industry especially in regions with underutilized resources. Additionally, Sharing economy allows companies and individuals to use facilitates and infrastructure that they might not need all the time such as executive offices and internet connections. In Asia on-demand services and assets (sharing economy) is uprising catalyzed by the rapid growth of industrialization (Ranchordás, 2015). The significance of this dissertation is to explore the opportunities that have arisen from sharing economy in Hong Kong, specifically co-working office space.

1.1: Research objectives and questions

The proposal identifies the following research objectives:

  • Exploration of innovation sharing economies concepts and the driving factors
  • Evaluate the office space demand, supply and evaluate whether there are working space business opportunities in Hong Kong

1.2: The research questions

  • What are the driving factors that stimulate the innovation-sharing economy?
  • How is the demand for co-working (office) space in Hong Kong, and China at large?
  • What are the causes of co-working space shortage in Hong Kong?
  • Which criteria are the local and national government using to deal with the office space shortage in the city?
  • How does the business model affect traditional offices and lifestyles?
